Plants when moving: packing, transport and import rules

Updated: October 2026Editorial team: Umzugsexpress GmbHTeam: 17 years in moving and clearance

Plants are the most delicate goods in a move: they tolerate neither cold nor heat in a closed cargo area. With a little preparation they arrive well.

In short

Plants go into the van last and come out first. Stand pots firmly, wrap shoots loosely, do not soak the soil. Live plants from the EU need a plant passport, from third countries a phytosanitary certificate.

Preparation the week before

  • Water normally two or three days before, not on moving day – wet soil is heavy and leaks.
  • Prune large plants slightly, tie long shoots together loosely.
  • Check for pests so they do not travel to the new flat.

Packing and loading

  • Stand small pots upright in open boxes, fill gaps with newspaper.
  • Wrap large plants in paper or fleece – not airtight in plastic.
  • Load last, unload first; never leave them long in a closed cargo area in the sun or frost.
  • Large tubs and palms: we transport them as a plant transport.

Plants from abroad

Live plants from the EU are not checked phytosanitarily on import, but need a plant passport. From other countries a phytosanitary certificate is required – also for travellers. Seed potatoes, vines, citrus plants and soil from third countries are banned (FOCBS/FOAG, in German). More on moving to Switzerland: guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can plants travel in the moving van?

Yes, on short distances. In heat or frost better in your own car, or load last and unload immediately.

May I bring my lemon trees from Turkey?

No. Citrus plants from third countries are banned.

Do plants from Germany need papers?

Live plants from the EU need a plant passport; there is no check at the border. Cut flowers and table potatoes are exempt.
