A place in a retirement or nursing home often becomes free at short notice, and then the move should happen within days – sometimes straight after a hospital stay. Relatives have to solve two things in a short time: setting up the room and dissolving the previous household. The two do not have to happen on the same day.
In short
The room first: we bring what is going along to the home in one short trip and set it up. The flat comes afterwards – the lease runs until the next termination date anyway, unless a replacement tenant takes over. What nobody needs we clear and dispose of; what the family wants to share out later we put into storage.
Two appointments instead of one
- Moving into the home: clarify with the home what may come along and how big the room is. We bring the armchair, chest of drawers, pictures and lamp, set them up and hang them.
- Sorting: the family takes time for keepsakes, documents and valuables. Anything we find while clearing we hand over to you.
- Dissolving the household: clearing, disposal, setting usable items aside on request, end-of-tenancy cleaning and the flat handover.
What fits into the room and how the home is prepared is covered in the guide Moving into a care home.
The flat: what tenancy law says
Moving into a care home does not end the lease automatically. A flat can be terminated with three months’ notice to a locally customary date unless the contract says otherwise (Art. 266c of the Swiss Code of Obligations, CO).
If you want to leave the contract earlier, under Art. 264 CO you can propose a reasonable replacement tenant who takes over the lease on the same terms. According to law.ch, the replacement must be solvent; the landlord usually has about a month to check. If the landlord rejects a reasonable replacement tenant without good reason, your liability for the rent ends. Otherwise the rent runs until the next termination date.
In practice this means: the flat usually does not have to be empty on the day of the move into the home. There is time to sort things calmly – unless the landlord and a new tenant want to take over sooner. For questions about an individual case, the Swiss tenants’ association (Mieterinnen- und Mieterverband) can help.
What we take on
- Moving for seniors: setting up the room, hanging pictures, with time and patience.
- Full household clear-out: clearing the whole household, setting usable items aside, disposal.
- Storage: furniture and boxes the family will decide about later.
- End-of-tenancy cleaning with the handover guarantee.
When it has to be very fast
If the move is tomorrow, call us. If a team is free, we bring the essentials to the home the same day. You can reach us Monday to Friday 8 am–10 pm, Saturday 8 am–8 pm and Sunday 1–6 pm. We work until 10 pm, with your neighbours’ consent until midnight; Sundays and public holidays by arrangement. A surcharge applies to emergency jobs. Whether it applies to your job and how much it is will be stated in the quote before you accept.
Sources (in German, read in October 2026): law.ch, early return of the rented property (Art. 264 CO), Swiss Code of Obligations, Art. 264 and 266c. Deadlines and fees change – the information from the authorities is what counts.

Frequently asked questions
Does the flat have to be empty on the day of the move into the home?
As a rule, no. The rent runs until the next termination date unless a reasonable replacement tenant takes over. There is time to sort things.
Can you set up the room in the home?
Yes. We bring the furniture, set it up and hang pictures – as far as the home allows.
What happens to furniture nobody wants?
On request we set usable items aside and dispose of the rest. What the family cannot decide on yet, we put into storage.
Can you organise this if we live far away?
Yes. A lot can be clarified by phone, photos and video call; we take over the key by arrangement.
