Student move: into a shared flat or first studio on a budget

Updated: October 2026Editorial team: Umzugsexpress GmbHTeam: 17 years in moving and clearance

From the parental home into a room in a shared flat, from the shared flat into a first studio: a student move is small – and still quickly costs more than necessary if vehicle, helpers and date do not fit together.

In short

Little volume means a van instead of a removal lorry and one or two movers. You save most by packing yourself, dismantling furniture yourself and helping to carry. After the move you register with the residents’ office – they also tell you whether weekly-resident status (Wochenaufenthalt) is an option for you.

What a student move needs

  • A van with one or two movers instead of a large removal lorry
  • Flexible time slots, also in the evening
  • Several pick-up points in one appointment: parental home, old shared flat, furniture bought second-hand online
  • On request: assembly of bed and wardrobe, taking old furniture away for disposal

More about the service: student move.

Five ways to save money

  1. Pack yourself and label every box – how is explained in the guide How to pack moving boxes properly.
  2. Dismantle bed, wardrobe and desk yourself before the appointment.
  3. Help to carry: tell us when you enquire and we plan the team accordingly.
  4. Give us all addresses and floors from the start – that way we plan the route without detours.
  5. Choose a date outside the customary moving dates: at the end of March, June and September moving companies are heavily booked (official moving dates by canton).

What it costs

Guide value: one vehicle with two movers costs CHF 190 per hour, with three movers CHF 285 (incl. VAT). A minimum of 3 hours is charged. A flat fee of CHF 190 per vehicle and job is added for the vehicle, fuel and the journey there and back (within the region; longer distances as quoted). You choose: a fixed price after the free survey, or billing by the actual hours.

For a few pieces of furniture and boxes, one mover with a van is often enough if you help; we state the price for that in the quote. How moving costs are made up is explained in the guide How much does a move in Switzerland cost?.

Move yourself or hire a company?

With a rented van and friends it often works too – as long as nothing heavy is involved and everyone has time. A company pays off for upper floors without a lift, for large furniture, for several pick-up points or when the move has to be done in one evening. For single items there is furniture transport.

After the move: register

In most cantons you register with the residents’ office of the new commune within 14 days, often online via eUmzugCH. If you live at your place of study during the week and regularly go home at the weekend, ask there about weekly-resident status (Wochenaufenthalt) – the commune sets the rules. All the bodies that need your new address are listed in the guide Registering your move.

Checklist for moving day

  • Keys and tenancy agreement at hand
  • Boxes labelled, furniture dismantled, screws in a bag attached to the piece
  • Space for the vehicle sorted out at both addresses
  • Payment sorted out: cash, TWINT or invoice
