Between two flats, during a renovation or a stay abroad, furniture has to go somewhere for a few weeks or months. Two questions always come up: how much space is needed, and how does the furniture stay in good condition?
In short
What counts is the volume in cubic metres, not the floor area. As a rule of thumb, allow about 20 m³ for a 2-room flat and about 30 m³ for 3 rooms. Store everything clean, dry and dismantled – and check with your insurer beforehand whether the stored goods are covered.
How much space do you need?
| Home | Volume (guide value) |
|---|---|
| 1–1.5 rooms | about 12 m³ |
| 2–2.5 rooms | about 20 m³ |
| 3–3.5 rooms | about 30 m³ |
| 4–4.5 rooms | about 40 m³ |
| 5–5.5 rooms | about 52 m³ |
These are the assumptions of our moving calculator for averagely furnished homes. If you only store part of your household, you need correspondingly less. We determine the exact volume at the free survey.
What storage costs
Guide value: storage costs CHF 22–32 per m³ per month (incl. VAT).
The total price also depends on the storage period, collection and return delivery, and access during the storage period.
How to prepare your furniture
- Store everything clean and dry. Defrost the fridge and freezer beforehand and let them dry.
- Dismantle large furniture; attach screws and fittings to the piece in a labelled bag.
- Protect upholstery with covers and wood with blankets.
- Use boxes of the same size: they stack securely and save floor space.
- Label the boxes and keep an inventory list.
- Put what you might need during the storage period at the front.
What does not belong in storage
Perishables, flammable items, hazardous goods, animals and plants.
Are the stored goods insured?
The model conditions of the Swiss Insurance Association cover household contents that are temporarily away from home up to a limited sum; contents that are permanently elsewhere are not covered (SVV, model conditions for household contents insurance 2022, in German). Whether a furniture store counts as temporary is decided by each insurer. So ask your contents insurer before storing. With us you can insure the stored goods on request.
Store it yourself or have it collected?
You can rent a storage unit from us and move things in and out yourself – or we collect the furniture, store it and deliver it back: furniture storage. For dismantling and reassembly there is furniture assembly, for single items furniture transport.
